Kata szelet

by | Jun 6, 2025 | Desserts

Kata szelet is a classic Hungarian cake that’s been around for generations. It’s the kind of dessert you’d see at family lunches, holidays, or just when someone felt like baking something special. There’s nothing fancy about it, but that’s what makes it so comforting.

The cake has three layers: two soft cake sheets and a rich filling made by crumbling one of the baked layers and mixing it with cocoa, jam and a few other things. It’s all topped with a light, shiny meringue and a dusting of cocoa powder.

It does take a bit of time to put together – especially since it needs to rest overnight – but the steps are easy, and the result is worth it. The next day, everything softens and comes together into a sweet, nostalgic treat.

If you enjoy old-fashioned, homemade cakes with real flavor, this one’s definitely worth trying.

Hungarian cottage cheese

This is what Hungarian túró looks like

You often ask me what kind of cottage cheese (or curd cheese or farmer's cheese - call it what you want) I use in the recipes. In Hungary the store-bought cottage cheese is dry and crumbly as you can see in the picture. So if a recipe calls for túró, I mean this type. If you can't obtain túró, you can try to make your own from whole milk. Click on the link below.

Metric system vs cup

In Hungary metric units are in use, all the recipes on this website are based on this system, so a kitchen scale is necessary. Since I’m not familiar with cup as a measurement unit, I convert grams to cups by using an online converter. The values in brackets, therefore, are only approximate volumes, so, please, double-check them before you start cooking.
