The Görög fruit soup is a sadly overlooked Hungarian classic – but once you know it, it’s a real summer lifesaver. It’s tasty, refreshing, and ready in minutes.
It was created by Chef Rudolf Görög, who competed and judged at many Hungarian and international cooking contests, and spent a decade working in 28 countries across four continents.
Despite the name, it has nothing to do with Greece. Görög means Greek in Hungarian, but here it simply refers to the chef’s surname – just like the famous Greek salad isn’t actually named after him.
For years, Rudolf was head chef at Budapest’s Astoria Hotel, where he also opened the Astoria Grill International. Back then, it was something completely new: pizza, hamburgers and Hungary’s first-ever hot dogs all appeared on the menu, alongside international salads like Polish egg salad, Cuban ham salad, Russian cucumber salad and Balkan cabbage salad.
But the place still needed a soup that was quick and easy to make. That’s when Rudolf created his no-cook fruit soup – and naturally, it became known as the Görög fruit soup.
